A central midfield player, Allen signed a two year professional contract in the summer of 2007, after captaining the youth team to the Quarter Final of the FA Youth Cup during 2006/07. Hailed as one of the most technically gifted players at the club, the new season began with youth team boss Dave Byrne urging the England youth selectors to give him a chance at international level - and Allen made his professional debut for the Town in a 4-1 Johnstone's Paint Trophy win over Brentford in September. His league debut came just over three months later, when Byrne - now caretaker boss - thrust him into the starting eleven at Southend in December.

After Allen had signalled that a loan move may have been on the cards in February, new boss Maurice Malpas gave him a run of games at the end of the month, which ended when Allen picked up an injury at Leyton Orient in the middle of March - an injury that kept him out until the final game of the season.

Allen's next start in the side didn't come until January 2009, when new boss Danny Wilson surprisingly selected Allen to pair with Lilian Nalis in the Town's midfield for a 3-2 win over Walsall. Allen kept his place for the following Saturday's match at Oldham, despite airing his concerns about his performance in his return match. Though he was dropped for the next game, Wilson suggested that Allen was still part of his first team plans, but he made just two more substitute appearances before the end of the season - and though he was obviously a good passer of the ball, he didn't seem to be cut out for the more physical aspects of League One football. Wilson eventually released Allen at the end of the season - though his now assistant Byrne suggested that the reasoning behind it was to give him the opportunity of first team football elsewhere that wouldn't be available at Swindon.
