A Northern Ireland youth international who joined on a season-long loan from Arsenal, where he had captained the youth side - the signing of the highly-rated Ballard was considered a coup for the club as it continued its rebuild under manager Richie Wellens.
Ballard made his Swindon Town debut as a late substitute in the opening day victory at Scunthorpe United, before making his full debut in the 3-2 loss to Chelsea U23 in the Football League Trophy - the defender scoring a header after losing his marker Ian Maatsen.
Unfortunately though, Ballard suffered a serious knee injury during the 3-0 League Cup loss at Colchester United, despite playing the full ninety minutes - the injury ultimately cut-short his loan as Ballard returned to Arsenal for rehabilitation in mid-August.
