Barthram came to Swindon as part of the much touted Tottenham-Town link in 2013 but his arrival, and departure, was much lower key than contemporaries Mass Luongo, Alex Pritchard or even Grant Hall. The right-sided full back arrived on a free transfer and departed on a free transfer two seasons later with just one goal and six league starts.

Barthram had been part of the Spurs youth system but when he was released without an appearance to his name, he seemed keen to further his education under Kevin MacDonald: “After speaking to the manager I realised the best option was for me to come to Swindon, and the manager has done a lot with the kids at Aston Villa and I am hoping to be one of his new young prospects coming through”.

Whatever Barthram’s ability, he remained a prospect for two seasons - first as understudy to Nathan Thompson at right back, then when Town changed to a back three, he was pushed further down the pecking order by fellow former Spur Nathan Byrne at wingback.

Barthram’s career at Swindon never really got going - his debut came against Torquay in a 1-0 League Cup win and a goal against Plymouth in the JPT were rare highlights. A bout of substitute appearances in the autumn of 2013 failed to turn into starts in early 2014. On those rare occasions he did start, Barthram rarely made headlines - when Town were thumped 4-1 by a visiting Wolves team, it was Darren Ward who shouldered the fans’ rage.

While the new season offered new promise for Swindon, it was worse for Barthram - three starts and even fewer minutes as sub behind the dynamic Byrne.

In March, Barthram was even sent to Exeter as a precursor to a loan that never materialised. However, towards the climax of the season, he did make two consecutive starts for Swindon - in the famous 3-0 drubbing of a scratch Town side at Preston and in the farcical home draw which saw Harry Agombar’s debut, Belford replace Belford in goal and Leyton Orient leave the Football League.

Twice more Barthram sat unused for the play offs games before his release at the end of the season. Finally Barthram tweeted and then deleted a message stating that Town was “such a disorganised club”, but it didn’t really cause much of a stir.
