Formerly of Liverpool’s academy, but more recently released by Fylde, Morecambe and US Sides Hartford United and Tacoma Defiance, Brewitt was signed on a short term contract in March 2023 to help combat Town’s defensive injury crisis after a deal to bring in experienced former Watford man Adrian Mariappa fell through at the last minute.
A stocky, strong centre-back, Brewitt went straight into the first team against Carlisle with fellow centre-backs Ciaran Brennan, Frazer Blaze-Tracy and Cian Harries all injured, lining up alongside Tom Clayton and Harrison Minturn in a somewhat makeshift three man defensive line. Town lost the game 1-0, but Brewitt gave a good account of himself. His arrival coincided with a poor run for Town, as it took nine games for Brewitt to taste victory in red and white, a 1-0 win against Bradford. Overall, he made 12 appearances and was offered a contract extension for the 2023/24 season.
Brewitt’s second season saw him initially cast as the central man in a three man defence with Frazer Blake-Tracy and Udoka Godwin-Malife bombing forward either side of him, often leaving Brewitt as more or less a sole defender against counter attacks. He seemed to grow into the role during Town’s excellent start to the season, but divided the fanbase between those that saw him as a player giving his absolute best in a difficult role and those who saw him as a limited footballer playing only because Town’s first choice centre back target, Ryan Edwards, had chosen to move to India instead.
As with the rest of Town’s side, Brewitt’s form tailed off markedly after the first ten games of the league season, but he was a regular in the side through until the middle of January. Over the back half of the season, a combination of injury problems he’d been forced to play through due to lack of depth and the signing of Conor McCarthy restricted him to only sporadic involvement in the first team. He scored his only Town goal in January in a 2-2 draw against Colchester, putting the ball into the roof of the net from inside the six yard box after a scramble.
Brewitt was among the large number of players released at the end of the 23/24 season.
