An Australian striker signed on a year's contract in July 2006 with an option for a second year, after a successful trial spell in which he scored four goals in five pre-season matches, Brownlie was a free agent after being released by A-League side Queensland Roar, who allowed him to pursue a career in Europe. The trial wasn't his first with Swindon, Brownlie previously appeared for the Town during another trial in 2002, scoring a goal in a 2-2 draw with Sporting Gijon before being released, and he returned to Australia after further trials with Sheffield Wednesday and Portsmouth proved unsuccessful.

Brownlie began his Town career as a substitute, coming on with just over ten minutes remaining in the Town's second match of the new season - a game against Barnet that seemed to be heading for a draw. Brownlie made an immediate impact, scoring with a wonderful strike from outside the area in the last minute of the game, that handed the Town victory. His first start in a Town shirt wasn't quite as impressive - after being booked in the last minute of extra time of a Carling Cup tie against Brentford, Brownlie was sent off immediatelty afterwards for questioning the referee's decision.

Brownlie's first league start didn't come until the end of September, when he started on the right side of midfield at Notts County. Despite not being convincing in this new role, he kept this position until the middle of October - though when he was pushed up front, he scored the opener in a 1-1 draw at Wycombe.

When new boss Paul Sturrock took over in November, with Lee Peacock injured, he gave Brownlie a chance up front for his first two games - though he gave a decent performance against Carlisle in the FA Cup, he missed two good opportunities to score - and the following week, a tactical change at half time saw Brownlie replaced with the returning Peacock, and the Town went onto win at Torquay. Brownlie was dropped to the bench for the following match, and his last appearance in a Town shirt came at the beginning of December, when after being introduced as a second half substitute at Mansfield, he was forced to retire injured after picking up an booking clattering the Stags' goalkeeper. Later that month, having assessed the striker, Sturrock told Brownlie that he was surplus to requirements at the County Ground, and that he was free to find another club. In March, Brownlie moved to Chester City for an unsuccessful loan spell, as defender Ashley Westwood moved the other way - and come the end of the season, he was back Down Under, signing for new A-League franchise, Wellington Phoenix.
