A defender signed from Southend United as an 18 year-old in January 2019, Curran’s Town career has generated significantly more comment than you would normally expect based on his impact on the pitch.

After making his debut as a late substitute against Notts County on the final day of the 2018/19 season, Curran was a regular on the bench throughout the following campaign that saw the Town win the League Two title - but he only added to his appearance tally with another pair of injury-time introductions, and two starts in the EFL Trophy - the first of which saw him substituted before half-time with the Town 2-0 down at home to Plymouth.

Despite his unimpressive start, Curran signed a new contract extension in August 2020, keeping him at the County Ground until the end of 2023/24 campaign - his continued appearance amongst the substitutes creating plenty of rumours behind the scenes. After an early season appearance, again in the EFL Trophy against West Brom U23, his full League debut came in December against Gillingham, with Curran selected in a three-man defence alongside Mathieu Baudry and Jonathan Grounds. He gave an unimpressive performance in a 2-0 defeat, receiving a four-out-of-ten rating in the Swindon Advertiser, and thereafter returned to the bench.

The highlight of his Town career came as a 90th minute consolation goal in the 2-1 defeat at home against rivals Oxford United, having been somewhat controversially introduced as part of manager John Sheridan’s double centre-back replacement in the 85th minute of a local derby, in which the Town were trailing by two goals. The next week, he was part of an oncoming quintet in Sheridan’s five-subs-at-once magnum opus, again in a defeat against Gillingham.

Curran’s place in the Town squad came under increased scrutiny through the back half of the season, with manager John Sheridan’s prickly reaction to questions doing little to quell rumours that forces beyond his footballing talent were involved in his continued selection. Sheridan criticised the local press for “picking out individuals” - which came as some surprise as his own post-match press conferences were not usually without criticism of one player or another - but never Curran. By the end of the season, Curran had registered six starts and eight substitute appearances in all competitions - and the Town were relegated to League Two. With chairman Lee Power selling the club over the summer, Curran was never going to feature under a new regime - and he was allowed to leave the club to join National League South side Maidstone. His departure was met with relief and sarcasm from Town fans on social media - sparking a bizarre wave of criticism from both his new club and a Z-list celebrity.
