Dixon was a product of the same Arsenal youth system that produced Charlie George and Pat Rice. Unfortunately, by his own admission, he was never in the same class as those two, and he arrived at the County Ground in the summer of 1973, via Reading and Colchester.
A committed defender, he didn't make his debut for the Town until January 1st, 1974 - in a 3-1 win over Preston. It took him until August 1975 to register his first goal from his full back position - but a move into midfield early in 1976 brought him three goals in five games.
By now, Dixon was in direct competition for a first team place with John McLaughlin. Danny Williams seemed to prefer McLaughlin, and Dixon was allowed to leave at the end of the 1976/77 season, having made over 130 league appearances. The decision to release him incensed the Town fans - who made a collection and bought a crystal glass set, which was presented to Will before one of his final home games.
