Manager Richie Wellens had tried to sign the former Portsmouth left-back in the summer of 2019 but the Welshman rejected Swindon in favour of a move to fellow League Two side, Mansfield Town. However, early into his Mansfield career, Donohue was arrested on suspicion of assault after an incident during a night out. Donohue was suspended and, in September 2019, he was fired by the Stags.

The following month, and with legal proceedings ongoing, Donohue signed for Swindon Town on a monthly rolling contract. He made his debut the 1-1 home draw against Plymouth Argyle and the powerful defender immediately fit into Wellens’ side, playing every minute for Swindon between his debut and the 1-1 draw at Cheltenham Town in the F.A. Cup.

In November 2019, Donohue disappeared from the side for the games against Salford City and his former employers Mansfield. It later emerged that, though he had signed a deal to the end of the season, the Football Association had blocked Town from registering Donohue - rejecting his re-signing due to a gap between his contract ending after the Cheltenham game and the subsequent deal being signed. Soon afterwards, Donohue picked up an injury, and Town completed the re-signing of former captain Paul Caddis which, along with a pending court appearance, seriously put any longer term contract for the left-back in jeopardy.

Despite being available to sign in January, Donohue didn’t feature for Swindon again, with Wellens explaining to the press that his injury and being nowhere near match fitness were the reasons behind the Town’s decision to not offer him another contract. That wouldn’t be the end of Donohue’s Swindon career though, as he was re-signed on a one-year contract at the end of September 2020 having proved his fitness, appearing for his second debut as a substitute in the win over Burton Albion. After a first start in the EFL Trophy against Exeter, he started nine consecutive games for Town before picking up an injury against Gillingham which forced him off. The nine matches included Town’s win at Bristol Rovers, after which Donohue was included in the Football League Paper’s League One Team of the Week.

Whilst recovering from the injury, the club issued a short statement announcing that Donohue had left the club for personal reasons. Donohue himself later clarified on Instagram that a serious family illness meant he wanted to be closer to his family in the North of England. After an unsuccessful initial trial at Bolton, he signed for Barrow in January.
