A youth team player, Garrard joined the club after being released by Tottenham as a schoolboy. He made his debut in the first year of his scholarship - coming on as a late substitute in a 4-0 defeat at Oldham on 26th April 2003, and he also made two sub appearances in the October of the following season, firstly in the LDV Vans Trophy match at Boston, and then the following week in a midweek defeat at Tranmere.

Having joined the club as a centre-back, Garrard was gradually moved out to the right side of defence, and he really broke into the first team during the 2004/05 campaign, making his full debut for the club in a 1-0 win at Rushden and Diamonds in the Carling Cup, and playing in LDV Vans Trophy victories over Exeter and Bristol City. It was a suspension handed to Jerel Ifil that handed him his first start in the league - regular right-back Steve Jenkins moved over into central defence to replace Ifil, and Garrard played as a wing-back in a 1-1 draw with Doncaster in mid-December.

Garrard went on to make eight league starts over the next month, though it was noted that he was nervous - and he admitted to being sick at half-time in every game that he started - apart from the match at Sheffield Wednesday, when, with 20,000 spectators watching, he actually left the pitch to vomit on the sidelines during a break in play!

Garrard's last match for Swindon came on January 22nd, when he was substituted in a match at Griffin Park, Brentford, afterwards he lost his place to a formation change back to a 4-4-2. The offer of a professional contract in April was the catalyst for a surprise exit for Garrard - the deal was rejected for "personal and family reasons", and Garrard left the club to seek a deal nearer to his home in Barnet.
