Fred Ford brought Gough to the club in July 1970. Ford was the assistant manager at Bristol Rovers when Gough was there, and he originally signed Gough to help out with the reserves. When Gough asked to prove himself in the Second Division, Ford granted his wish.
Gough had made just one appearance for Rovers, and then slipped into the non-league. When he made his debut for Swindon in August, eleven years and 121 days had passed since his last league appearance. Swindon won 2-0, and Gough scored in a match in which Sunderland player Bobby Kerr broke one of the Town crossbars!
The return match with Sunderland seven months later was just as eventful - Gough was stretchered off with a knee injury. It proved to be his last game for the club, and he was released at the end of the season.
The following season, Gough captained the famous Hereford team who knocked Newcastle out of the cup.
