A USA under-20 international forward, signed on an emergency loan from Leeds in February 2011 until the end of the season, after a loan deal with Motherwell fell through as he had already played for two clubs that season (FIFA rules stating that though a player can play for more than two clubs in one season under the emergency loan rule, emergency loans cannot be conducted across international borders) - Grella making his debut for the Town in a 4-1 defeat at Southampton. It proved to be the only game he would play under the man who signed him - Danny Wilson tendering his resignation after the game, with the Town in deep trouble at the bottom of the table.
The following weekend, new boss Paul Hart moved Grella into a wider position in his new 4-5-1 system - and he went on to make a total of six starts for Swindon - netting his only goal in a 1-1 draw against fellow relegation strugglers Dagenham and Redbridge in March. At the end of the month though, Hart dropped him to the bench, choosing to try striker Elliot Benyon in an unusual wide position ahead of Grella. Two weeks later, when Grella was again going to be named on the bench for the trip to Brentford - it emerged that the he had chosen to return to Leeds - the American stating that he came to Swindon for first team football, and that he wasn't getting games under the new management. The decision seemed a strange one, as the loan could not be cancelled - and technically speaking he remained a Town player for the rest of the campaign - both Hart and Leeds boss Simon Grayson blasted Grella for his decision - Grayson stating that he may 'suffer the consequences', Hart saying that it was 'good riddance to bad rubbish', and that he would 'fight tooth and nail' to not pay a penny of his wages.
