A player who described himself as a ‘box-to-box’ midfielder, Hollands signed on loan in November 2012, after consulting friend and former Town player Alan Connell, Hollands didn’t have the most impressive of starts in a Town shirt - after making his debut as a second half substitute in a 4-1 win over Yeovil, the following two games that he featured in both ended in defeat by the odd goal - Hollands incurring the wrath of boss Paolo di Canio for a poor performance at Notts County. In the next game, he scored in the wrong net, equalising an early Matt Ritchie goal when he failed to deal with a low cross in a 1-1 draw with fellow promotion candidates Doncaster.

Despite these setbacks, Hollands soon settled into the team - in particular forming a superb partnership with Simon Ferry in the middle of the park - as everything seemed to click into place for the Town over the Christmas period, and after a 2-0 win at Oldham, Hollands netted his first goal in the right net in an incredible 5-0 win over table topping Tranmere, before repeating the feat on New Year’s Day, in another 5-0 whopping of Portsmouth. With Hollands now an integral part of his first eleven, di Canio even offered to fund the loan extension himself - but Hollands himself admitted that he didn’t know what the future held for him as he went into the last scheduled game of his loan spell, another impressive 4-0 win over Carlisle.

The release of Oliver Risser enabled di Canio to extend Hollands’ loan by another month, but just two games into his extended spell, it was cut short by injury - hobbling out of a 2-0 win over Shrewsbury, his injury was later diagnosed as a microfracture in his foot likely to keep him out for six weeks. Di Canio was keen to keep the midfielder at Swindon, in the hope that he would have the finances to keep Hollands until the end of the season, but those thoughts were scuppered when parent club Charlton decided that he should have surgery, extending his rehabilitation for a total of nine weeks, and right up until the end of the season.
