It has been said that were David Beckham a product of a Premier League academy in the 2020s, he’d have been brought through as a full back rather than a winger, reflecting the change in the expectations of the two roles. Perhaps Remeao Hutton is the lower league reflection of these trends - the Jon Paul McGovern of his own era - able to cross a ball like few others seen in a red shirt, but with the habit of going missing defensively, he causes problems at both ends of the pitch.
Hutton is a product of the West Midlands, having come through the Walsall youth system before moving to Birmingham, enjoying loan spells with Yeovil and Stevenage before joining Barrow on a permanent basis for the 2021/22 season. 12 months and 50 appearances later, he joined Town for an undisclosed fee. He would quickly establish himself as the first choice right full back (or wing back) for Scott Lindsey and then Jody Morris, playing significantly more minutes than any other outfield player during his first season in Town.
Hutton’s early season form was particularly strong, keeping the highly rated Marcel Lavininier out of the team and providing regular assists as he proved to be Town’s most threatening attacking outlet even from defence. Perhaps unsurprisingly considering Swindon’s management were openly courting offers for players, there were strong rumours of interest from higher division clubs in January 2023, but no move was forthcoming. After the transfer window closed, Hutton appeared unsettled and his form slipped for a few weeks, but it recovered later in the season and he finished the season having provided 12 assists - more than any other defender in the EFL or the big 5 European leagues. He won the Loathed Strangers Podcast Player of the Season award, but also received criticism from some quarters, perhaps reflecting the clear strengths and weaknesses in his game.
The summer transfer window of 2023 did not bring Hutton a move, and he started the new season as Town’s regular right wing back, a role that on paper should have suited his skillset more than being asked to defend as part of a four. Town got off to a flier that season, but Hutton’s contribution was often overshadowed by the overlapping centre backs, with Udoka Godwin-Malife down Hutton’s side often attracting more praise. As Town’s form dipped, Hutton was amongst many criticised for a lack of defensive contribution, but he continued to be picked ahead of Brooklyn Genesini, racking up 27 appearances and contributing six assists.
Entering the final six months of his contract, Hutton’s move finally came in January of 2024, but it was more sideways than might have been expected at times during his Town career: Gillingham were the destination, which was never likely to lead to too many well wishes, but his move also brought some national attention when a strange video of Hutton explaining what he would bring to the Priestfield club was leaked and led to him being ‘spoken to’ by his new club within days of signing.
