As a youth team player, Jutkiewicz first came to prominence in 2004, when he ended the Milk Cup tournament in Northern Ireland as top scorer - emulating the feat of Wayne Rooney who participated in the tournament four years previously. Jutkiewicz broke into the Town's first team during the first year of his scholarship, coming on as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat at Swansea's Liberty Stadium in April 2006, and he was thrust into the starting eleven just a week later, when he gave a hard-working performance in a 2-1 win at Scunthorpe.

Eager to hold on to the young star, manager Iffy Onuora promised Jutkiewicz a professional deal, despite him still having a year of his scholarship remaining - but doubt was cast over the deal when Onuora was sacked and replaced with new boss Dennis Wise during May. When Jutkiewicz had no contact with Wise over the summer, he admitted he was "slightly concerned" about his deal - but any fears were dispelled when he signed a three year contract in July 2006. Wise later described Jutkiewicz as "a boy in a man's body".

Jutkiewicz's role in the first half of the 2006/07 season was restricted to that of a substitute, and though he did start a Johnstone's Paint Trophy match at Wycombe in September, he didn't start a league game until after Wise departed in November. After scoring a hat-trick in the FA Youth Cup against Swansea in a 6-0 win, and a good performance in a Wiltshire Premier Shield match against Salisbury, new manager Paul Sturrock gave Jutkiewicz his first team chance at Mansfield, and though the Town lost 2-0, Jutkiewicz was the only player to come away with any credit from the game. He kept his place for the following week, and opened his account with the Town's first in a 2-0 win at top-of-the-table Walsall, and followed this up with another two goals in the next three games. In all of these games, and over the busy Christmas period, Jutkiewicz looked jaded after giving his all during the ninety minutes - and into the New Year, with the Town reverting to a 4-5-1 formation away from home, he reverted back to the bench - where he mostly stayed right up until the end of March. During this time, Jutkiewicz was snapped up by Premiership side Everton - signing a four year contract after an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth up to £1m for Swindon, was agreed. Sturrock alluded to the fact that he had kept Jutkiewicz out of the limelight during this period - as soon as the deal was done, he was back in the starting eleven, pairing up with new signing Barry Corr in a strong forward line for a televised clash at Lincoln. When the Town won the game 3-2, Jutkiewicz kept his place for the following three games - but it was from the bench that he would make the biggest impact, in April. In successive weeks, Jutkiewicz was utilised as a second half substitute - and in both, he scored vital goals - firstly by restoring the Town's lead against bottom club Torquay with seven minutes remaining, and just a minute after the Gulls had equalised, then by netting the only goal of the game at Bury. The goals put Swindon on the brink of promotion, which was sealed in Jutkiewicz's final game when he made a late cameo in a 1-1 draw with champions Walsall.
