Youngster Kanu generated unusual levels of excitement amongst Town’s youth ranks and was already on the fringes of the first team as a first year scholar in 2022/23. Highly rated by the hierarchy, Kanu made two league substitute appearances in the season, at home against Grimsby with Town three goals into a five goal win, and then a month later in the defeat to Doncaster. At youth level, his goalscoring was prolific, scoring 39 goals over the season.
He was expected to be part of the first team in the 23/24 season, but a cruel ACL injury set him back significantly and he had to watch from the sidelines as Town’s youths excelled in the FA Youth Cup with Miles Obodo and Botan Ameen both shining up front. Despite the injury, it was a surprise that he was not offered professional terms or an extended scholarship at the end of the season.
