A young defender who made his debut in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy match against Brentford in September 2007, Kennedy signed an eighteen month professional contract in February 2008. Made captain of the reserve team, Kennedy was handed his League debut by caretaker boss Dave Byrne in December 2008 - Byrne making the unusual move of announcing Kennedy's inclusion the weekend prior to the match taking place. Though obviously not quite fit enough to last the full ninety minutes, Kennedy did well in the three matches he played, and he signed a new one year deal in February 2009, before being forced to make his final appearance of the campaign in an unusual left midfield position after injury to Hal Robson-Kanu at Yeovil.

Kennedy continued to be on the fringes of the first team for the first part of the 2009/10 season, before a stress fracture of the pelvis sidelined him for a long spell - only returning to light training in March - and though he took part in the Town’s pre-season tour of Austria, Kennedy was still not in full training.

Kennedy got himself onto the fringes of the first team at the start of the season - after coming on against Brentford at the end of August, he started three consecutive games, all of which ended in clean sheets for the Town, with two victories. Despite this, when Alan Sheehan re-signed for the club in September, he was first dropped to the bench, finding himself behind both Sheehan and Michael Rose in the pecking order, before agreeing to join Gillingham on a month's loan in November. After that spell completed, he returned to Swindon, and signed a year's extension to his contract - but again not able to break into the side, he joined Rotherham on an initial month's loan in February, a deal that was eventually extended to the end of the season.

By the time he returned to the County Ground, manager Danny Wilson had been sacked, as had his replacement Paul Hart - and with the Town relegated to League Two, new boss Paolo di Canio made Kennedy his first choice left back. He scored his first goal, and Swindon's first of the season in the opening game - converting from the penalty spot after a foul on Billy Bodin against Crewe - and Kennedy went on to start the first thirteen matches of the new campaign.

With Swindon making an indifferent start, di Canio brought Liam Ridehalgh in on loan from Huddersfield - and Kennedy spent most of Ridehalgh's loan spell out of the side, only appearing in the 4-1 FA Cup win over the Terriers, in which Ridehalgh was not allowed to play. When Ridehalgh finally returned to Yorkshire, Kennedy was still fighting for his place - pre-season signing Alessandro Cibocchi had been di Canio's preferred back-up for Ridehalgh, so it wasn't until the turn of the year when Kennedy again made the starting eleven, appearing in four consecutive victories, including a famous win over Premier League Wigan in the FA Cup.

After appearing in a superb 4-1 win at promotion chasing Southend, and then helping the Town to the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final the following week, Kennedy made just two more starts over the next two months - Cibocchi preferred throughout February and March - then in the build up to the Wembley final, di Canio signed Jay McEveley on loan from Barnsley, and thrust him straight into the starting eleven. Kennedy was to make just one more appearance for the Town, in a 2-1 defeat at Aldershot in a game where a point would have sealed promotion - and though the League Two title was won, Kennedy was released at the end of the season.
