The son of former Charlton midfielder Mark, and brother of Team GB Olympic bronze winning gymnast Alice, Liam Kinsella had been a name linked to STFC for a number of years before he joined in the summer of 2024, becoming Town’s first permanent signing of the summer despite being signed as late as the 28th July. A tough tackling midfielder with more than 200 League Two appearances for Walsall who had won their player of the season award twice in the previous three years, he looked a tremendous acquisition on paper.
Sometimes sensible signings don’t work out though, and Kinsella had a disappointing stay in SN1: he didn’t start consecutive games until the end of November, with manager Michael Flynn generally preferring Saidou Khan and George McEachran as his starting midfield with Dan Kemp ahead of them. Kinsella did eventually break into the team, becoming a regular from mid-November through to January and certainly starting to look more comfortable in Flynn’s side.
Then within ten days, both Flynn and Kinsella were gone: Flynn sacked and replaced by Gavin Gunning and Kinsella on a free transfer to League One strugglers Cheltenham. A confusing set of messages emerged after the transfer, with Kinsella insisting he’d loved every minute of his time at Town, Gunning suggesting that he wanted to be closer to Birmingham to be with his pregnant fiancé (Cheltenham being about half an hour's drive less than Swindon) and that the transfer wasn’t about money, and that Kinsella would also have only been a squad player in his plans.
