Williams Kokolo is a curious case: he played for Swindon for only around seven months, but signed three contracts in that time, before tearing the last of them up to return to France. Formerly of Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Burton, Kokolo initially signed a two-month contract at Swindon in November 2023, having not played professionally for more than 12 months after being charged with and later acquitted of three rape charges.
With Town facing something of a mounting crisis in the left wing back position: Tariq Uwakwe, Reece Devine, Benn Ward, Tyrese Shade and Brooklyn Genesini were all either injured or tried and found wanting in the role, and moving Remeao Hutton across to the left in the FA Cup tie against Accrington also proved pretty disastrous, meaning Kokolo was thrown straight into the first team for the game against Stockport. He didn’t have big shoes to fill, but he certainly proved a more reliable option than anything that had come before him, and it wasn’t a surprise when he inked a contract extension to the end of the season in January.
Apart from a brief flirtation with Zak Elbouzedi as a left sign back, the position would remain Kokolo’s for the rest of the season, and he clearly improved with a run of games as his match fitness returned, becoming more of an attacking threat, scoring both of his Town goals in the last five games of the season. At the end of the season, Kokolo was listed in the club’s retained list as having an option taken up to extend his contract, so it was something of a surprise when he left the club over the summer to return to France with Stade Lavallois.
