An experienced centre-back who had played most of his career at Championship level with Rotherham, Hull and Barnsley, Angus MacDonald looked like the perfect summer signing in the summer of 2022, and Scott Lindsey made him club captain immediately, with both captain and head coach bullish about targeting promotion in the build up to Town’s first game away at Harrogate. They promptly lost 3-0, somewhat setting the tone for a disappointing season, with the defensive trio of MacDonald, Baudry and Brennan looking distinctly immobile.
Lindsey quickly shifted to four at the back, with MacDonald partnering first Baudry and then Tom Clayton, with the young, left footed Scot proving a much better foil for the experienced MacDonald and sparking Town’s best spell of the season. MacDonald wasn’t quite proving the heir to Gordon Greer, but he was improving and it was a big blow when he was injured in the loss to Northampton at the start of October, dislocating his collarbone. MacDonald finished the match, but then missed more than two months of matches, returning on 17th December.
When January rolled around and Scott Lindsey departed the club, rumours - of varying levels of floridity - began to circulate about behind the scenes issues. MacDonald was heavily linked with a move away from Town in January, but it was still a surprise when his contract was torn up on deadline day to allow him to join Aberdeen on a short-term contract, before a replacement was confirmed. Town were seemingly poised to replace him with Tottenham youth player Malachi Fagan-Walcott, but failed to complete the paperwork in time, leaving Town with a gaping hole in their squad for the second half of the season.
Eyebrows were further raised when he proved a huge hit in the Granite City, earning a two-year extension. We’ll probably never know the full story of his Town departure, but the lack of a replacement cost Town’s promotion challenge dearly and contributed ultimately to the departures of Sandro Di Michele and Jody Morris.
