A pacy winger who made his debut as a substitute in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy match against Brentford in September 2007, having featured in the Town's tour of Austria in the close season, Macklin signed an eighteen month professional contract in February 2008. After rumoured interest from Premiership side Chelsea, Macklin made his League debut the following season, as an injury time substitute at Brighton in April 2009, but made just one more substitute appearance, the following week at the County Ground, when he gave an unconvincing performance in a defeat against Leyton Orient. Nonetheless, he was one of only five youth team players offered an extension to his contract at the end of the season.
After coming on as a substitute on the opening day of the 2009/10 season, Macklin made his full debut days later in 4-1 win at MK Dons in the League Cup, partnering Billy Paynter up front. The following weekend, he made his full league debut, again against the Dons, but was withdrawn early in the second half, and found himself on the bench for the following game. For the rest of his time at the County Ground, Macklin flirted with the first team - but after picking up a knock having come on in a 3-2 win at Brentford in October, Macklin was forced to continue with the Town having used all their substitutes - the knock later turned out to be a leg fracture. The injury kept him out for just over two months, and though he made a few more substitute appearances, he was loaned out to Torquay in February, before being released when his contract expired at the end of the season, despite chairman Andrew Fitton being keen that the youngster should be kept on. Eventually, agreement was reached that it would be better for the player if he was to get first team football elsewhere - shortly after, he signed a permanent deal to return to Torquay.
