Continuing Town’s pattern of signing promising young goalkeepers on loan to be their first choice, following in the recent footsteps of Matej Kovar, Sol Brynn and Steven Benda, Swindon signed goalkeeper Mahoney on a season-long loan from QPR in June 2023 as their first new signing ahead of the 23/24 season. Mahoney had been part of the QPR youth set up for more than a decade, and had previously spent time on loan at non-league clubs Welling, Bath and Stratford, as well as making a couple of Championship appearances for his parent club as injury cover.
Mahoney was not a physically imposing goalkeeper - an online listed height of 6’ 2 feels like it might be a case of dating app 6’ - but he more than made up for his relative lack of size by being an excellent shot stopper and quickly claimed the #1 shirt ahead of Lewis Ward. He was certainly busy in a Town side that tended to throw caution to the wind, and he would concede almost two goals a game over the course of his spell, but there was no real doubt that he would remain Town’s #1 for the season up until the point where a serious hamstring injury ended his season suffered against Tranmere in December. Mahoney returned to QPR to rehabilitate, and signed a new contract there in the summer of 2024, while Town signed Jack Bycroft - their first permanent first choice goalkeeper for some time - in January.
