When looking at targets for the January 2024 window, a strong, commanding centre back to bolster Town’s porous defence would have been at the top of every fan’s list, and, standing 6’4 and broad with it, Barsley loanee Conor McCarthy looked to fit the bill perfectly. He was coming off the back of a difficult 12 months with injury, so the hope was just that he would stay fit enough to drag Town up the table.
McCarthy hit the ground running, excelling on his debut against Bradford City and the following game at Newport at the heart of Town’s defence. Unfortunately, as with many loanees before him, Swindon dragged him down to their level, and whilst he started all but one game over the rest of the season, McCarthy struggled with form a little and Town would only keep two clean sheets after his debut for the rest of the season. He returned to Barnsley at the end of the season.
