Coventry-born goalkeeper McCormick spent two years at the County Ground between 2018 and 2020, either side of two of his three spells at Plymouth Argyle.

Before that, in 2012, the Town had offered McCormick a trial period on his release from prison as part of a rehabilitation programme, having served four years of a seven year sentence after he pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. Town chairman Jeremy Wray became the centre of a national press storm for the decision to offer McCormick a route back into football after his release, and Town eventually decided not to offer the goalkeeper a contract. He instead restarted his career with Truro City before joining Oxford United and Plymouth Argyle.

McCormick finally joined Town - after a second trial in the footballing sense - on a one-year contract ahead of the 2018/19 season, initially deputising for Lawrence Vigouroux whilst the Chilean was on international duty before getting a run of games in September including a league debut away at Morecambe. After a long spell on the bench, he also played the last nine games of that season and started the following year as the first choice with Swansea loanee Steven Benda as his main competition.

In 2019/20, McCormick played the first fourteen games of the season before being dropped for Benda, the Swansea keeper quickly establishing himself as both an excellent goalkeeper and, crucially for Wellens’ style of play, comfortable with the ball at his feet. The latter skill in particular gave him a significant edge over McCormick, a more traditional stopper, and McCormick would only play one more game in the EFL Trophy before leaving to join Plymouth for a third time at the end of the season.
