Irish youth international McDermott was a highly rated prospect at Manchester City in his early years in football, but by the time he signed for Swindon aged 28 in 2017 he had spent short spells at clubs as varied as Bournemouth, Dundalk and Ramsbottom United. Most recently, he had spent a relatively productive spell at Rochdale where he made more than 50 appearances.
McDermott started the season as a first team player, and made four of his eventual seven league starts in the first four games of the season. He made his debut on the opening day against Exeter, but was replaced by Kaiyne Woolery at half time. A week later at Morecambe, he scored the only goal of the game - and of his Town career - with a curling left footed effort cutting in from the right.
Against Barnet in September, McDermott received a straight red card for an unnecessary lunging tackle on the edge of the Barnet box - on returning from suspension, he had to make do with a spell of appearances from the bench before making the first team again. After Christmas a groin injury and a formation change restricted him to only sporadic substitute appearances, and it was little surprise when his contract was not renewed at the end of the season.
After leaving Town, McDermott did not play professional football again and later appeared on the Loathed Strangers podcast where he talked openly about struggling with his mental health and alcohol during his playing career. He returned to live in Ireland and went on to work outside of football.
