The younger brother of former Chelsea top prospect and England U21 Josh, George is also a small, technically skilled central midfielder who emerged from the Blues academy, including being an unused substitute during the 2019 Europa League final and a couple of short loan spells in the Netherlands.
At the time of signing for Town in February 2023 as a free agent outside of the transfer window, McEachran had been out of the game for almost a year after his release from Chelsea. On the strength of his relationship with new Town boss Jody Morris, he was asked to train with Town and then signed a contract for the rest of the season to bolster Town’s ranks after a number of injuries. Despite a long period out of the game, he hit the ground running with a man of the match performance on debut against Sutton United on Valentine’s Day 2023.
McEachran took the #5 shirt of the previously departed Louis Reed, and displayed a very similar skillset, technically excellent and strong on the ball, but also waspish off it and able to put himself about well despite not being especially physically imposing. Like Reed, he also displayed quality delivery with his left foot from set plays. Swindon took up an option of another year on his contract at the end of the season to keep him at SN1 for the 2023/4 season.
As with many players in the Town squad, the 23/24 season will not be one that George McEachran looks back on with pride. He made 34 starts and eight further appearances from the bench, but his performances lacked the promise shown in his first season, not truly bad but certainly disappointing. He did score two goals: one for Town, against Salford in February, and one against - an own goal that proved the difference in an away loss at Milton Keynes.
He was among the many players released by Town at the end of the season, and then appeared in a video circulated on Twitter wearing an Oxford Utd shirt a few days later, watching Town’s rivals (featuring his brother Josh) seal promotion to the Championship in the League One playoff final.
