A left back signed on loan from Barnsley until the end of the season in March 2012, McEveley was thrown in at the deep end - suprisingly making his debut for the Town in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Final at Wembley, which the Town lost 2-0 to Chesterfield.
Though McEveley's debut performance was understandably not his best, he soon settled well into the side, and he missed just one game before the season was out - the only blemish on his ever-present record when he sat out the 2-1 defeat at Aldershot, after being named as one of five squad members accused of celebrating promotion too early, boss Paolo di Canio dropped him to the bench. When the group apologised, McEveley was reinstated to the starting eleven for the game at Gillingham, where promotion was secured despite the 3-1 reverse, Swindon wrapping up the League Two championship the following weekend, with a 5-0 thumping of Port Vale. McEveley was moved to a central position for the final game of the season, replacing Alan McCormack for a 0-0 draw at Bradford before his loan period expired.
When McEveley was not offered a contract at Oakwell, he was quick to sign on a permanent basis during the close season, signing a two year deal - and he began the season at the first choice left back, starting all but two league games in the first four months of the season. During this time, McEveley praised di Canio for changing his outlook on the game - telling of the attention to detail that the Italian paid to every game, helping McEveley to want to improve himself as a player.
At the beginning of December though, McEveley picked up a knee injury that would plague him for the rest of the season. After flying to Rome for surgery on his cartilage, he returned to action sooner than expected - initially diagnosed as needing two months out, and despite a scare where he felt pain in his knee, he returned to action in the middle of January, making a late substitute appearance in a 2-0 win over Shrewsbury. McEveley later admitted he had been playing through the injury for some weeks prior to the surgery. By the beginning of February, McEveley was reinstated to the starting eleven, but he played just two more times under di Canio - the Town boss resigning his position before the month was out. After his departure, the full-back started each of the next eight games, including four under new boss Kevin MacDonald - until a recurrence of his knee problem sidelined him from mid-March until the end of the season, as Swindon missed out on back-to-back promotions, losing in the play-off semi-finals.
At the end of the 2013/14 season, McEveley was released by Town and went on to sign for Sheffield United, where he was made club captain, before playing for Ross County and Tranmere.
