Australian midfielder McGilp only made three substitute appearances adding up to little more than half an hour of match time over his two seasons with Swindon, but may well be better remembered for his exploits in two FIFA19 video game tournaments organised during the Covid-19 lockdown of March 2019.

Known as a keen Twitch streamer and Fifa player, McGilp was the obvious choice for Town’s representative when Leyton Orient organised a charity FIFA tournament after the suspension of all professional football. Proving his credentials as a Swindon Town player in a cup competition, McGilp exited in the first round to FC Nantes, who were represented by actual eSports professional Bruce Grannec. He found more success in a second tournament restricted to contracted professional footballers, reaching the semi-finals before again losing out to French opposition, this time FC Lorient’s Umut Bozok.

Offline, McGilp never established himself at Swindon and his contract was cancelled by mutual consent in October 2020, and he joined National League South side Slough Town two days later.
