In August 2018, McGlashan was the first signing of the season for Town boss Phil Brown - and, like his manager, the thirty-year-old winger was a seasoned fixture in the English lower leagues, including playing under Brown himself at Southend.
After an itinerant career at the likes of Tooting and Mitcham, Kingstonian and Aldershot, McGlashan signed a two-year deal at Swindon, playing in the role for which he had made his name at Cheltenham Town - an orthodox, almost old school, winger and claimed the number seven shirt. He was never a prolific scorer though, for despite playing 329 Football League games before arriving, he only ever managed 21 goals.
"I bring pace and directness, making chances and getting crosses into the box," McGlashan told the Adver at the time."My game is quite attacking, I am a ball-carrier and get the team up the pitch. That’s what I have been doing all my career. That is the sort of player I am, and the gaffer knows that is what I bring to the table."
McGlashan was true to his word that season, and true to his previous goalscoring form - playing mostly on the right wing, he made 12 starts, 12 substitute appearances and scored no goals. It was the kind of middling performance fitting of Brown’s team that season - a season that saw Swindon sink to 16th place in November, and the former Hull boss sacked.
Brown’s sacking couldn’t have come at a worse time for McGlashan though, and not just because of their former relationship - the winger had become wing-back in Brown’s final game - an FA Cup win over York City. When new boss Richie Wellens recreated the same system on his debut, the diminutive McGlashan had a torrid time trying to defend in a crushing 4-0 home defeat to Carlisle. It proved to be a watershed moment for McGlashan.
Just one more start followed that season, a Boxing Day draw at Northampton (McGlashan was hauled off minutes after half time) - and by mid-January 2019, he was gone from the match-day squad forever. Loan spells at Wrexham and Chesterfield followed, but while Wellens was never critical of the man, it was always hard to see how a 30-year-old orthodox winger whose game was about ‘getting crosses into the box’ was going to suit a high pressure pressing game.
McGlashan was released in January 2020, with Town paying up the remainder of his contract.
