Born in Swindon, 6'4" Steve progressed through the youth ranks, and became backup for Frank Talia. Produced a magnificent display on his League debut at Portsmouth, despite needing stitches in his testicles after a first-half collision!

Became the club's first choice keeper during the 2000/2001 season, and his form alerted some top Premiership clubs. He initially refused Town's offer of a new contract at the end of the season, then, just 24 hours after signing the new deal, he was bizarrely sold to Notts County for £150,000 with a 50% sell-on clause.

That could have been that for the Steve Mildenhall Town story, but he returned to Town as goalkeeping coach in 2018 under Phil Brown. He survived through the Wellens years and the ill-fated spell of John Sheridan, and after the departure of Sheridan and his assistant Tommy Wright, was more or less the last man standing at the club in the summer of 2021. Almost by default, Mildenhall had to act as de-facto manager and director of football, informing players that they were being released by the club and taking training for the few remaining players, even as both they and he were going unpaid by the club.

When Clem Morfuni, Rob Angus, Ben Garner and Ben Chorley all arrived at the club with the resolution of the takeover saga, Mildenhall was able to step back into the relative comfort of his goalkeeping coach role - although surprise international call ups for JoJo Wollacott forced him to be registered as a player at the age of 43 in order to sit on the bench as backup goalkeeper. He didn’t get on to the pitch - probably to his relief - but he was named as the backup goalkeeper in Town’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup third round. The return of Wollacott and the signing of Manny Idem meant that he was not named in another matchday squad.
