An experienced midfielder signed on a one-year deal in June 2012, Miller made his debut in the Carling Cup on the opening day of the season in a 3-0 win over Brighton - his League debut coming the following weekend, when he missed a penalty in a goalless draw at former club Hartlepool, having been installed as the club’s penalty taker given his previously superb record from the spot. He made up for it three days later - scoring the Town’s second goal in a 3-0 win over Crawley.

Despite numerous contenders for the midfield slots, Miller was a virtual ever-present for the opening third of the season - dropped to the bench only for games at Oxford (in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy) and Shrewsbury, both games in which he was introduced as a substitute in the second half. After missing his second penalty of the season in a 4-0 win at Stevenage (having previously scored 33 out of 34 penalties in his career before joining Swindon), Miller picked up an injury in the first half of a League Cup tie against Premier League Aston Villa - and though he played through the pain to complete the match with what he thought was a dead leg, the injury proved to be far more serious - a muscle tear that kept him out until the middle of December. When he did return, Swindon were just beginning a superb run of form that would propel them into the thick of the race for promotion - and for the first time, Miller found himself in and out of the side - Simon Ferry and loan signing Danny Hollands seemingly the preferred pairing. It took an injury to Hollands before Miller was restored to the starting eleven - with the Town in the midst of a takeover and under a transfer embargo, he was one of only fifteen fit players that made the trip to Colchester in early February - two weeks later, when Town boss Paolo di Canio resigned and his backroom staff followed, with no board in place to appoint a new man, Miller was asked to take charge of the first team, as a joint caretaker manager with fellow senior pro, Darren Ward.

The duo’s spell in charge only lasted for two games - after an unconvincing draw with Preston was followed with a poor home defeat by lowly Bury - Miller himself admitted that the team needed a “new voice” to keep them on track - the newly appointed board moved quickly to bring in Kevin MacDonald, who paid tribute to the work that the pair had done after leading the Town to victory in his first game in charge at Coventry. In the following game though, Miller picked up a calf injury that would disrupt the rest of his season - and though he was passed fit to play in games at Brentford and Yeovil, it was revealed that he had been given permission to miss training sessions in a bid to not aggravate the problem on the heavy ground - but after being withdrawn early in the second half against Notts County toward the end of March, he didn’t feature again until the final game of the season - Swindon surrendering three goals in the last three minutes to lose at Scunthorpe. Despite this, the Town had already secured their place in the play-offs in Miller’s absence - the midfielder named on the bench for both legs of the semi-final as Swindon were knocked out by Brentford - before significant cuts in the playing budget led to the Scot not being offered a contract for the following campaign.
