Though he preferred a midfield role, Mitchell was signed on a month's loan from Wigan to cover at right-back, after the surprise sale of Andy Gurney early in the 2004/05 season, making his debut for the Town in a 1-0 win at Colchester on 4th September. Having started five games for Swindon, Mitchell's deal was extended for another month, and there was talk of a permanent deal, however, just two games into the extension, promotion-chasing Wigan Athletic recalled him due to an injury crisis. Mitchell returned to the JJB Stadium, and the Town went on to sign Steve Jenkins from Peterborough.
