After many years in Tottenham's reserve side, and many loan periods at different clubs, Glenn Hoddle rescued John Moncur from White Hart Lane for an £80,000 fee, towards the end of the 1991/92 season. He made his debut as a substitute in a 1-0 win over Port Vale on 4th August 1992, his full debut coming just four days later, in a 1-1 draw at Millwall.

Moncur started the following season in the side, but injury spoiled a majority of the season, and he made just fourteen appearances in the league, three of which were as a substitute. He returned to fitness shortly before the play-off campaign started, and he was drafted straight back into the squad at the expense of Micky Hazard. Moncur shone in the three play-off games - scoring a goal in the second leg of the semi-final at Tranmere, which helped assure Swindon's place at Wembley.

Moncur was almost ever-present in the Town's Premier campaign, missing just one game. He scored Swindon's first ever goal in the top flight, a quick 25 yard free-kick in an opening day 3-1 defeat at Sheffield United, and was one of the few stars of the season - with his ability, creativity and sheer determination, he was a real midfield general. Even Manchester United great Eric Cantona became frustrated when faced with Moncur, finally resorting to stamping on Moncur's chest after he had dispossessed him, an offence for which Cantona received a red card.

By the end of the season, once the Town's relegation was confirmed, rumours were rife that Moncur would be one of the first to leave. They proved to be true, with Moncur signing for West Ham for £1 million in June 1994.
