A left-sided midfielder who joined on a year's contract in June 2006, Monkhouse was Dennis Wise's first signing as Town manager. He made his debut on the opening day of the season, a 1-0 victory at Hartlepool United on August 5th.
Monkhouse started in each of the first four games of the season - all of which resulted in victories - but was forced off the field in the last of these, when he picked up what was first thought to be a hamstring strain in a match at Darlington. The injury turned out to be a tear, and it kept him out of action for a month - he returned in mid-September as a substitute at Notts County. A week later, he opened his Swindon goalscoring account to put the Town 1-0 up against Boston, but a late equaliser meant that a drab game ended in a draw.
Monkhouse remained in the side throughout October - scoring his second Town goal in a 3-0 win over Grimsby - but a recurrence of his hamstring problem at Shrewsbury sidelined him again for another spell. By the time he returned to action, Wise had departed for Leeds, and new manager Paul Sturrock immediately put Monkhouse's position under threat by signing the left-sided Sofiane Zaaboub. Monkhouse took part in a Wiltshire Premier Shield clash against Salisbury, but by the end of November, Sturrock sent him out on a month's loan at Hartlepool - initially to regain fitness after his injury problems.
Monkhouse's arrival at Victoria Park sparked a revival for United, as they went on a run of nine consecutive victories to storm into the playoff places - and Monkhouse himself soon made it clear that staying with Hartlepool was his preferred option. With Zaaboub impressing at Swindon also, his loan deal was extended into January, then finally, early in the New Year, the Town agreed an undisclosed fee to end his short Town career, in which he never lost any of his ten league matches. Less than a month later, he returned to haunt Swindon, scoring the winning goal in front of the Town End, as Hartlepool took three points from the County Ground in February.
