Cork-born Jake O’Brien joined Town on loan from Crystal Palace early in January 2022 and made his debut away at Mansfield Town in a 3-2 defeat, and made a further fifteen starts over the second half of the League Two season. Almost two metres tall, O’Brien certainly added to Town’s aerial ability and put in some good performances before an injury put him out for several weeks in mid-March. By the time he returned to fitness, Town had switched from using three central defenders to a flat back four and O’Brien had been supplanted by the experienced pairing of Conroy and Baudry, making only one more start before the end of the season.
