One of three professional footballers called Danny Rose active at around the same time, Swindon signed the defensive midfielder rather than the England international left back or the Mansfield Town striker. A graduate of Manchester United’s youth academy who captained the reserve side, his first professional games came at Oxford United in the Conference. After five years spent with Oxford and other non-league clubs including Newport County, he made his first appearance in the Football League with newly promoted Fleetwood Town.

Now established as a League Two player, Rose returned to Oxford after their eventual return to the League and spent a further three years there before playing for Northampton and Portsmouth, winning League Two with both clubs. It was from Portsmouth that he joined Swindon in January 2019, signing an 18-month deal and making his debut as a substitute in a win away at Tranmere. He made his first start at Milton Keynes a couple of weeks later, but picked up an injury that kept him out for another month. On his return from injury in March, he established himself as a first choice option with seven consecutive starts as Town’s season tailed off to a 13th place finish.

The 2019/20 season saw Rose in competition with midfield options including Jordan Lyden, Michael Doughty and Anthony Grant. He was regularly involved through the opening months of the season before Grant in particular established himself as the first choice defensively minded midfielder, limiting Rose to substitute appearances through the winter. He did manage to score his first and only Town goal in a 3-1 win over Crewe in January, and when the season ended early due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Rose became a League Two champion for the third time in his career.

After 18 months at Town, Rose was released and joined Grimsby, where his habit of winning League Two finally failed - the Mariners finishing bottom of the football league.
