Player Profile

Charles Selwood, a Swindon lad born and bred, spent much of his life employed at the GWR works. He was playing football for Swindon Wanderers as early as October 1891 and although left half-back was his usual position Charlie was, on occasions, thrown up with the forwards.

In fact when he joined Swindon Town in the summer of 1894 his first game - a 4-2 friendly win at Bristol South End - saw Charlie play inside left and score Town's fourth goal which the Swindon Advertiser described as: "...the best of the four". The following week Charlie was part of the Swindon Town XI that played it's first ever Southern League game. Back in his more accustomed left-half role, Charlie was unable to prevent Town from going down 4-3 at home to local rivals Reading.

Swindon struggled to adjust with the competitive nature of the newly formed Southern League and early results were not good. Charlie featured in 4 further games with his final league appearance coming in a disapppointing 2-0 defeat at home to Chatham in December. With the advent of professionalism dawning on the Town club, Charlie's involvement was limited to only one further minor game. A 1-1 draw against Freemantle in early January. Towards the end of the month he was back playing for Swindon Wanderers.

In total his STFC career spanned 17 games. 5 Southern League appearances, 2 FA Cup matches and 10 friendly games with one goal to his credit.
