Paolo di Canio's second signing as Town boss - central midfielder Smith was signed from Conference side York City in June 2011 in a reported £30,000 deal, and he made his debut on the opening day of the season in a 3-0 victory over Crewe - but after a less than impressive overall performance, he was withdrawn with twenty minutes to go, before being dropped from the sixteen for the next two games.

Returning to the side toward the end of August, Smith was dropped to the bench again in September - but being introduced as an early substitute in a game against Southend, Smith opened his Town account scoring with a well-taken effort - the first goal in a 2-0 win.

For the rest of the season, the tough-tackling, hard-working Smith shared the 'midfield enforcer' role with Oliver Risser, as Swindon recovered from their poor start to seal the League Two title, whilst also reaching Wembley for the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final. Smith added to his Town account with two more goals - a fine strike to wrap up victory over Gillingham in October, followed by a headed effort - again against Southend, which helped Swindon seal a superb 4-1 win over their fellow promotion candidates, and move into the top three for the first time since the opening day.

When the promotion-winning squad returned to training for pre-season, it was perhaps surprising when Smith was named by di Canio as one of three first team players who were surplus to requirements for the upcoming League One campaign - the arrival of Alan Navarro to play in his position prompting Smith's exit - and Smith was allowed to leave the club after just one season, returning to York after they won promotion back to the League.
