A young forward signed on loan from Sheffield United for the 2020/21 season, Smith impressed in his limited opportunities in a red and white shirt. In many ways, he was a victim of Town generally playing with a single central striker - at 5’ 10”, Smith was not really cut out for a target man role and was seemingly far more effective playing in a pair.

When he did get chances, Smith displayed an eye for goal which has been beyond many Town strikers over the years, being one of only two Town players to reach double figures for goals in the season and only scoring two fewer than Brett Pitman, who played almost twice as much.

Smith made his debut in a League Cup tie against Charlton as the sole forward, and grabbed his first goal three days later in an EFL Trophy against West Brom. The arrival of Pitman pushed him down the pecking order and his appearances became more sporadic, although he did achieve the unusual feat of scoring three goals in three consecutive appearances across three consecutive calendar months.

Smith’s time at Town looked to be coming to an end in January when Swindon signed Tyrese Omotoye on loan from Norwich, but when Sheffield United refused to recall the young forward, Town were left with two loan forwards, neither of whom seemed to have the trust of John Sheridan or his coaching staff. Goals towards the end of the season against Wimbledon, Portsmouth and Wigan put a bit of gloss on what was clearly a frustrating time at Town for Smith. The forward joined the Supporters’ Club on a “Monday Night Panel” interview at the end of the season, where he criticised John Sheridan’s lack of tactical instructions, further endearing himself to many Town fans.
