A highly rated prospect during his time playing for Glentoran in his native Belfast, Stewart was on the radar of a number of Premier and Football League clubs, and it was therefore considered a bit of a coup when the twenty-year-old joined Swindon in August 2015.

Stewart found his first few months in Swindon difficult, and it was reported at the time that he was homesick and wished to return to Glentoran on loan within six weeks of his arrival. Swindon were willing to allow the loan, but only with a recall clause that the Irish FA would not allow. Stewart was therefore forced to remain at the Town, and made his sole appearance of the season as a second half substitute away at Millwall in October. Small and technically very able, Stewart was given a rough introduction to English football at The Den and did not reappear in the first team that season, although he did make two appearances during a short loan spell at Grimsby.

After some bright performance in pre-season, Stewart started the 2016/17 season much closer to the first team, and scored a goal on his first appearance - as a substitute in a game against QPR in the league cup which Town lost on penalties. The goal was a dipping volley from just outside the box when through on goal, and Stewart followed up by being one of two Town players to score his penalty. That game would provide the high point of Stewart’s time in a red shirt, as after a few more league substitute appearances, he suffered a significant knee injury which kept him out of the first team reckoning until the middle of January. He made three further substitute appearances before being released at the end of the season, unsurprisingly choosing to return to Northern Ireland with Linfield, his childhood club.
