As Town manager Bert Head assembled a team of youngsters in the late fifties, winger Summerbee was spotted playing for Cheltenham Boys. He became one of the first of "Bert's Babes", making his debut in a 2-0 win over Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic, in December 1959. His first goal came just over four months later, in a 4-3 win over Colchester in April.

Summerbee became a regular member of the side the following season, the Town benefitting from all the attributes of a great winger - pace, skill, strength and a great ability to cross the ball. He also scored his fair share of goals, netting nearly forty times in his six years with the club. When future Town legend Don Rogers made his debut in the 1962/1963 season, Swindon were graced with international class wingers on both sides - and their first ever promotion duly arrived. Both Summerbee and Rogers represented England at under-23 level.

Summerbee was at Swindon for two more seasons. After a string of injuries and bad luck resulted in the Town's relegation in 1964/1965, Summerbee was seen as the biggest asset to the club, and it was decided he should be sold to balance the books. Just two games into the next season he was sold, to Manchester City for £31,000, where he stayed for many successful seasons, winning an FA Cup winners medal. He also went on to gain full international honours, winning eight caps for his country.
