Signed from Liverpool on loan in November 1997 to gain some first team experience, Thompson’s ability impressed during his spell at Swindon, but unfortunately he couldn’t help Swindon produce the right results - his arrival at the club coincided with a spectacular slump down the table - though he contibuted to the Town's 4-1 win over rivals Oxford, winning a penalty that was converted by Mark Walters. Thompson went on to play regular Premiership football for Liverpool, before his Anfield exit.
