With shorts pulled up past his waist, and sharpened elbows, "Chalky" was a Swindon hero.
An opportunist striker with an amazing habit of being constantly offside, White signed for the Town in July 1986 after then Bristol Rovers manager Bobby Gould suggested that he play part-time for them, whilst assisting the club's Commercial Department. Chalky turned them down, and Lou Macari snapped him up on a free transfer.
He made his Town debut on August 31, coming on thirteen minutes from the end of a league match versus Notts County. It was enough time for Chalky to open his Swindon account - though he couldn't prevent them slumping to a 2-1 defeat. He went on to score 21 goals in his first season, including the two that won Town promotion in the play-off final versus Gillingham at Selhurst Park.
Over the following years, White forged a lethal partnership with Duncan Shearer, a strike force which took Town into the play-offs in 1989 and 1990 - and he appeared in the ill-fated play-off final win over Sunderland. Three years later, Chalky again turned out for the Town at Wembley, coming on as a substitute and winning the penalty which Bodin converted to send the Town into the top flight of English football for the first time.
