When England under-16 captain Leigh Mills was allowed to join Tottenham Hotspur before the start of the 2004/2005 season, Town fans were led to believe that the deal included a player coming in the opposite direction on loan for the season. After a prolonged saga, which involved both clubs addressing the other via their official websites, it became apparent that the loan deal wasn't set in stone - and that Tottenham only had to make their "best endeavours" to provide a player on loan. With Jacques Santini only just installed as head coach, he was reluctant to do a deal before he had chance to assess his squad. The season started, and with Andy King's injury hit squad seriously lacking in attacking players, the deal was far from perfect.
Eventually, just as King looked resigned to not getting a player, Yeates was allowed to join the Town for a training session, with a view to a permanent deal. An injury to Sammy Igoe prompted King to secure his services for a month's loan, just as clubs from the Championship made offers, and six weeks after the deal for Mills was completed. Yeates made an impressive debut for the Town a day later, in a 3-0 win over Hartlepool United, on 28th August 2004. He went on to make a total of just four appearances for the Town, before being sent back to Spurs by King after a disagreement - and they had to wait a further three months for another loan player from Tottenham.
