When Jake Young signed on loan from Bradford in the summer of 2023, it was expected that he would add depth to a forward line already including Charlie Austin, Rushian Hepburn-Murphy and Jacob Wakleing. Young had spent part of the previous season on loan at Barrow, where he’d failed to find the net over seventeen appearances, so there was little sign of what was to come.
Following in the footsteps of another Bradford loanee forward Eoin Doyle, Young had the purplest of purple patches whilst at the County Ground. Striking up a great understanding with Town’s attack, in particular fellow loanee Dan Kemp, Young scored on his league debut against Crewe and then followed than up with a brace away at Wrexham and a four-goal glut in Town’s 6-0 demolition of Scott Lindsey’s eventual playoff winners Crawley.
His goalscoring did come in bursts: eight in four games around that Crawley performance, and then in six consecutive games from the end of October, with seven blanks drawn in between, but there was little argument about his performances and contribution to the team as he also provided four assists. Unfortunately for Town, whilst Young was thriving, his parent club were struggling badly - there were times in the first half of the season where Young had scored more times than Bradford collectively - leading to the sacking of manager Mark Hughes.
New Bradford boss Graham Alexander wasted no time in recalling Young once the window opened, and whilst there was transfer interest from League One, he made a few appearances for the Bantams before an operation on his hamstring ended his season.
