A youth team player who first came into prominence in November 2011 when, as a twelve year old, Young rejected the opportunity to join Chelsea’s renowned academy. Later, in April 2014, he and fellow Town youth players Callum Gunner and Will Christopher were called up by Scot Gemmill for the Scotland U15 games against the Republic of Ireland.

This created a fair amount of expectancy on the midfielder, who first emerged in the first team set-up as an unused sub for the 2-0 away loss at Millwall in October 2015, which proved to be Mark Cooper’s last game in charge of the club.

In February 2016, Young made his senior debut under manager Luke Williams, as a second half sub in the 1-0 away loss at Port Vale at the age of 16 years and 185 days which at the time made him the third youngest player in Town history to play a League fixture for the club, behind Paul Rideout and Ernie Hunt.

His first home appearance occurred on the final day of the 2015/16 season, a dead rubber against Shrewsbury Town, as a 79th minute substitute for Ellis Iandolo. Within minutes it became a dream County Ground debut as, with Town already 2-0 up, Young perfectly placed a shot past Callum Burton to score Town’s final goal of the season and making him the third youngest league goalscorer in Town history behind Rideout and Andy Caton.

Luke Williams handed Young a three-year professional contract in August 2016 but this didn’t deter the interests of clubs elsewhere with Wolverhampton Wanderers being linked to Young in late 2016.

However, the running theme of Young’s professional career at Swindon was injuries having been plagued to the point of being almost forgotten about. He appeared as a sub in the 3-2 loss against Luton Town in the Football League Trophy in December 2016 and didn’t appear again for the first team until Phil Brown brought him on as a second half sub against Chelsea U21, in the same competition, in August 2018. The appearance ended in disaster for Young who got injured and was replaced by Sol Pryce just seven minutes after coming on. He was named on the bench by Richie Wellens during the early stages of his tenure but he would never play for Swindon again.

With his Swindon Town career all but over it still came as something of a surprise that Young decided to drop down to the Southern League Division One South to join Highworth Town on loan in March 2019, but it appeared to have a positive impact as he scored 6 goals in 8 games before the seasons end.

After just seven appearances over four seasons (three of which came as a youth player), Young was amongst ten senior players to be released by Richie Wellens in the summer exodus of 2019. However, Young’s ability would earn him a move to a higher level after he signed a one-year contract with League One side Coventry City after a successful trial.
